Wherever you are in the world, us Brits love a takeaway curry – Tikka, Josh Rogan, Balti – you name it, we’ve tried it. Paired with carb friendly sides (Pappadums and Basmati Rice, we’re looking at you), this Indian flavour combination is one of the countries most cooked (or ordered) food.
Nowadays, around 70,000 staff are employed by the more than 9,000 Indian Curry Restaurants in the UK and, in fact, in London there is a greater number of Indian Restaurants than there are in Bombay and Delhi combined. Now that’s something to digest.
So where did it all begin?
Almost 200 years ago, an Indian migrant Dean Mahomed opened the countries very first curry house – catering for the trend of spicy food that started sweeping the nation. Named ‘Hidostanee House’, this was the country’s first dedicated Indian restaurant – connecting curious foodies with fresh and innovative flavours. Here, elitist diners could smoke on hookah pipes, relax on bamboo-cane sofas – all whilst enjoying deliciously fragrant meat, fish and vegetable dishes.
Fast-forward to 2017 and we’re now eating more curry than ever before – with two thirds of our out-of-house eating habits in the UK based around Indian foods. From restaurant favourites Dishoom in London to Mowgli in Liverpool, the UK boasts some of the best Indian restaurants around.
